Judith Joy Ross

For this assignment, I decided to try and emulate some of Judith Joy Ross' work, an American photographer born in 1946 in Pennsylvania. She creates black and white images, using older photographic styles and tools (8x10 camera). Most of her work is inspired by Eugene Atget, August Sander and Lewis Hine.

The majority of her portraits feature people whose expressions are fairly neutral, staring directly into the camera. Depending on the person, some of the portraits are more body length, to give more info on the subject, while others are more close up (like above).

One of the techniques she uses to give her pictures more of a vintage feel, is a technique known as printing-out paper prints. Essentially what she does, is put the negatives on a sheet of photo paper and expose it to the sun for several minutes. The result is a print with a wide range of gray tones. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to recreate that the way she does it, but I'll try to emulate it in another way.
